GREG SEMU

greg semu is photographer, looking at Greg Semu's work really stood out for me, seeing a crowd of pacific islanders staring at him with a roasted pig in front of greg semu himself, all dressed up with traditional clothings on with long brown curly hair. palm trees in the back round with tapa cloth. what i see that is strong to me in my culture is greg semu's tatau on his body a samoan traditional tattoo.

why i chose this photo of Greg Semu's work is that its really strong with in my religion and also my samoan culture. just the thought of standing there with a different culture around standing strong with a tatau giving his last words or so as the last supper.  i can relate to this photo knowing that Greg is playing a big Samoan part but also playing Jesus which to me makes this photo effective.

a meaning i see behind this photograph is the belief that us as pacific islanders have a strong belief in Jesus Christ. where this photo shows that Greg re-made his own version of the last supper in a cultural way.

    EDITH AMITUANA'I

young samoan teenager girl wearing a ie lavalava, holding mugs. photo seems like it was taken a few years back.

Edith amituana'i is also another photographer i like, having to choose this photo of Edith's work was like a realism of how majority of us young samoan teenagers live today where when you see a photo similar to this photo a lot would understand and also relate about what this work is on about. this also is why i chose this photo because i could easily relate to it as well, in a Samoan family for a teenager when a guest comes over to your house you would wear a ie lavalava to show respect to them and make a cup of coffee or tea to make your guests feel welcome into your house.

MIKE GIANT

Mike Giant is a photographer but also a tattoo artist. his work is very different to a lot of other artists. the images he creates is cartoon based but also makes them look 3D shaped which is very interesting to me, the detailed he makes is done by a black marker. the way he took this photo makes the tattoos on the girl very strong which stand out very well.

when he uses a black marker for his illustration its interesting in a way when he shows a lot of detail in his work. his work is very westernised where his designs are very common or very similar to what people are getting tattoo'd now days with all the cartoonish skulls and other pictures that relate to his type of style.

relating to Mike Giants work is the type of style i like myself where i want to move away from samoan designs and also try something new or something outside of my samoan culture where his is very catching because his work can have so much meaning behind the tattoo its self.
MARK ADAMS

what i like about this is how Mark Adams took progress photos of how suluape the samoan tattooist is tattooing a samoan triditional tattoo on someone. his photos really show a lot of pain that the person is going through but also a lot of courage of getting this done.

listening to the sound of the Au which is the name of the samoan tool for tattooing has a rhythm while they tattoo the person getting the samoan tatau.

i can relate to this,  its really strong in my samoan culture to get the samoan tatau its not just ink going into your body its a powerful meaning especially in a samoan family where you a relied on by the elders of your family or your church for something to be done in formal way or how you speak of delivery.

SYLVIA JI

Sylvia Ji's work is another style that i like where her work its very cartoon based but also represents the living dead. the colours really stand out. its inspirational to me on how i like picture based design.
seeing a solid red back round with red washed on her body and face reminding me of blood being spread everywhere representing that death piece i see in her work. i feel inspired on how artist like herself can express death through painting or imagery.
looking at this imagery of Sylvia's work really shows how shy she is a person who keeps a lot to herself but can throw mood swings at times, she's anxious about her feelings towards other people. its like she's building up a lot of hatred towards someone but cant express it through words.
